Varicose
& spider veins

Varicose and spider veins are common vascular concerns that appear when tiny blood vessels near the surface of the skin become enlarged or twisted. They often show up on the legs, thighs, or ankles and may appear as small, web-like clusters or more prominent, raised veins. While usually harmless, they can cause discomfort, heaviness, or swelling and may affect how you feel about the appearance of your legs.

These visible veins can be influenced by a number of factors, including genetics, pregnancy, hormonal changes, standing for long periods, or simply the natural aging process. For many people, they develop gradually and become more noticeable over time.

Although they are very common, varicose and spider veins can still impact confidence and quality of life. The good news is that there are safe, effective, and non-surgical treatments available to reduce their appearance and address any underlying discomfort. With medically guided techniques tailored to your unique needs and goals, it is possible to restore comfort and confidence in your skin.

What causes varicose
& spider veins?

Poor Circulation and Valve Dysfunction

Varicose veins typically develop when valves in the veins weaken, allowing blood to flow backward and pool. This pressure causes the veins to stretch, twist, and become visible under the skin often on the legs. This is known as venous insufficiency, and it tends to progress over time without treatment.

Genetics

Family history plays a major role in vein health. If your parents or siblings have had varicose or spider veins, your likelihood increases. Some people are simply more prone to weak vein walls or faulty valves due to inherited traits.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations especially during pregnancy, menopause, or while taking hormonal birth control can contribute to the development of spider veins or worsen existing vein issues. Estrogen can weaken vein walls, while pregnancy increases pressure in the abdominal and leg veins, both of which can trigger visible changes.

Prolonged Standing or Sitting

Jobs or lifestyles that involve standing or sitting for long periods can interfere with healthy blood flow in the legs. Without regular movement, gravity makes it harder for veins to return blood to the heart, leading to congestion and vein enlargement over time.

Aging and Skin Thinning

As we age the skin becomes thinner and less elastic making underlying veins more visible. At the same time vein walls lose tone and valve function may decline which increases the risk of spider veins and varicose veins particularly on the lower legs and ankles.

At Victoria Park Medispa, we offer proven, non-surgical treatments to safely reduce the appearance of spider and varicose veins. Whether you’re seeking relief from discomfort or simply wish to restore a clearer, more even skin tone, our team of vein and aesthetic specialists is here to support you with personalized care and clinically backed solutions.

FAQ

Got questions about varicose & spider veins? We’ve got answers!

Is vein treatment permanent?

Yes, once a vein is treated with sclerotherapy or laser, it is permanently closed and absorbed by the body. However, new veins can form over time due to genetics or lifestyle factors, so maintenance treatments with ClearV, ExcelV, or additional sclerotherapy may be needed.

Does sclerotherapy hurt?

Not much. Most patients find sclerotherapy very tolerable. You might feel mild stinging or pressure during the injections, but any discomfort is minimal and short-lived.

Can I treat veins during pregnancy?

No. Vein treatments, including sclerotherapy and laser therapies, are not recommended during pregnancy. It’s safest to wait until after delivery and breastfeeding are complete.

Do I need to wear compression stockings after sclerotherapy?

Yes. Wearing compression stockings for a few days after sclerotherapy helps optimize results, reduce swelling, and improve circulation during healing.

How soon can I return to normal activities after vein treatment?

You can usually resume daily activities right after sclerotherapy, Vbeam, ClearV, or ExcelV treatments. Some redness, bruising, or swelling may occur but tends to resolve quickly.

When should I worry about varicose veins?

If you’re experiencing pain, swelling, heaviness, or changes in the skin near the veins, it’s time to seek medical advice. These symptoms may indicate underlying vein disease that needs professional evaluation and possibly treatment with sclerotherapy or other options.

How can I get rid of varicose or spider veins?

Sclerotherapy is ideal for treating leg veins, especially spider and small varicose veins.
For facial veins or small red vessels, Vbeam®, ClearV, and ExcelV lasers are excellent options.
All of these are non-surgical treatments with minimal downtime.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins form when vein valves weaken, allowing blood to pool. Contributing factors include genetics, aging, hormonal changes, pregnancy, and prolonged sitting or standing.

How can I prevent varicose veins?

While you can’t always prevent them, you can lower your risk by staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, avoiding long periods of sitting or standing, and elevating your legs when resting. Wearing compression stockings during long travel or pregnancy can also help.
