Excessive sweating

Excessive sweating, also known as hyperhidrosis, is more than just an inconvenience. It’s a condition that can affect daily life in quiet but meaningful ways. Whether it shows up under the arms, on the palms, feet, or face, sweating beyond what’s needed for temperature regulation can leave you feeling uncomfortable, anxious, or held back in social and professional situations.

Many people suffer in silence, thinking it’s something they just have to live with. But hyperhidrosis is a medical condition, not a reflection of hygiene or effort. It often appears without warning, even in cool temperatures or while at rest, and can impact confidence in a way that few other concerns do.

The good news is that there are effective, non-invasive solutions available. With medically guided treatments that target the root causes of excessive sweating, it is possible to feel comfortable in your skin again with care that is discreet, compassionate, and backed by science.

What causes excessive sweating?

Overactive Nervous System

In primary hyperhidrosis the sympathetic nervous system becomes overly responsive. It sends repeated signals to the sweat glands even when the body does not need to cool down. This can lead to persistent localized sweating especially in the hands feet underarms or face often brought on by mild stress or heat.

Genetic Predisposition

Hyperhidrosis tends to run in families. If you have a parent or sibling who experiences excessive sweating, you may be more likely to develop it as well. This inherited form, known as primary focal hyperhidrosis, usually begins in childhood or adolescence and is not linked to any underlying illness.

Hormonal Changes

Hormones play a key role in the body’s temperature regulation. Events like menopause, puberty, or thyroid imbalances can disrupt the normal balance, leading to secondary hyperhidrosis. Many people first notice excessive sweating during major hormonal transitions in life, even without any prior symptoms.

Medications

Certain medications can list excessive sweating as a side effect especially those that influence the nervous system or metabolism. These may include specific antidepressants pain relievers or diabetes treatments. If you notice increased sweating after starting a new medication it may be helpful to consult your healthcare provider.

Underlying Medical Conditions

Sweating that is sudden, widespread, or accompanied by other symptoms may signal an underlying health issue. Conditions like diabetes, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), infections, or neurological disorders can all influence the body’s sweat response. In these cases, it’s important to treat both the root cause and the sweating itself.

At Victoria Park Medispa we offer clinically proven non surgical treatments to help manage hyperhidrosis so you can regain confidence and feel more comfortable in your skin. Whether your symptoms are localized or more widespread we are here to guide you with care discretion and expertise.

FAQ

Got questions about excessive sweating? We’ve got answers!

What is hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition in which the body produces more sweat than is necessary to regulate temperature. It often affects the underarms, hands, feet, face, or scalp, and can occur even without heat or physical exertion.

How does Botox® treat excessive sweating?

Botox® blocks the nerve signals that activate the sweat glands. It is injected into areas such as the underarms or hands, which significantly reduces sweating for 4 to 8 months.

How do I know which treatment is right for me?

During a consultation, your symptoms, health history, and goals will be evaluated to recommend the most suitable treatment, such as Botox®, miraDry®, or a combination of the two.

Can hyperhidrosis be cured?

No. There is no definitive cure for primary hyperhidrosis, but it can be effectively managed. Treatments like Botox® and miraDry® provide long-lasting relief and help restore confidence.

Is hyperhidrosis treatment painful?

No. Treatments with Botox® and miraDry® are generally well tolerated. Botox® involves just a few small injections with minimal discomfort. For miraDry®, the area is numbed to ensure optimal comfort.

When will I see results?

Results from Botox® usually appear within 3 to 7 days, with full effect in about 2 weeks. MiraDry® often provides immediate improvement, with full results developing over the following weeks.

Can areas other than the underarms be treated with Botox® or miraDry®?

Yes. Botox® is often used to treat the hands, feet, and face in addition to the underarms. MiraDry®, however, is currently approved by Health Canada and the FDA only for use on the underarms.

Are Botox® and miraDry® treatments safe?

Yes. Both treatments are approved by Health Canada and the FDA and have an excellent safety profile when performed by qualified professionals.

Is hyperhidrosis common?

Yes. Millions of people suffer from excessive sweating, and many of them remain undiagnosed.

Can I return to normal activities after treatment?

Yes. Treatments with Botox® and miraDry® require little to no downtime. Most patients can return to their usual activities the same day.

Does sweating get redirected to other parts of the body?

No. Treating one area does not cause an increase in sweating elsewhere.

Is one treatment enough?

No. Botox® typically needs to be repeated every 4 to 8 months. MiraDry® may require one or two sessions to achieve long-lasting results.

Does insurance cover hyperhidrosis treatments?

Yes, in some cases. Hyperhidrosis treatment may be covered by insurance when diagnosed by a general practitioner or specialist and when traditional treatment options have not provided satisfactory results. Coverage depends on your insurance plan, but many providers recognize the use of neuromodulators, such as Botox®, for the medical treatment of hyperhidrosis. It is recommended to confirm coverage details directly with your insurance provider.

Does hyperhidrosis treatment improve self-confidence?

Yes. Most patients experience significant improvements in comfort, self-esteem, and overall quality of life after treatment.
