Time shows up across the whole face: a heavier brow, flattened cheeks, deeper folds around the mouth, and a softening along the jawline. These are the signs of facial sagging, and the loose pockets of skin that form on either side of the chin have their own name: jowls. Both are among the most common reasons people come to Victoria Park Medispa.
Facial sagging happens as the structures that support your skin (collagen, elastin, fat pads, and the underlying bone) gradually weaken or shift. Gravity pulls everything downward: the brow descends slightly, the mid-face loses its lift, and the once-sharp definition of the jaw softens into jowls. Most people see these changes appear in stages, often beginning in the late thirties or forties.
This is a natural part of aging, not a flaw. And if you wish your face still had the lift it once did, you’re in good company. Today’s non-surgical treatments can rebuild firmness, restore lost volume, and redefine your features without surgery.
Collagen is the protein that keeps skin firm; elastin is what lets it bounce back. Production of both peaks in our twenties and starts to slow noticeably after age 30, roughly a one percent decline each year. By the time most people see jowls forming, they’ve lost a substantial portion of their original collagen.
Healthy, youthful cheeks act like a tent pole for the lower face. As we age, the fat pads in the mid-face shrink and shift downward. Without that volume holding the skin up, everything drifts toward the jawline, and jowls form in the space the cheek used to fill.
This is the cause most people overlook. The bones of the face, including the jaw and chin, slowly lose mass with age. As the underlying bone retreats, the skin and soft tissue above it no longer have the same scaffold to drape over, which is one reason jowls can deepen even in people with otherwise great skin.
UV exposure is one of the biggest accelerators of skin aging. It breaks down collagen and elastin and triggers the formation of free radicals that damage skin cells. Pollution, dry climates, and frequent temperature swings also chip away at the skin’s resilience.
Some people inherit thicker skin or stronger underlying bone structure and develop jowls later in life. Others are genetically more prone to early skin laxity. Neither is your fault, but knowing your tendency helps us recommend the right preventive or corrective plan.

Got questions about sagging and jowling in the face? We’ve got answers!
Jowls are pockets of loose, sagging skin that form along the lower jawline, on either side of the chin. They develop as facial skin loses collagen, the cheeks lose volume, and the underlying bone gradually retreats with age.
Most people notice the earliest signs of jowling in their late thirties or forties, although genetics, sun exposure, and significant weight loss can bring them on earlier. Early intervention, before the skin loses too much elasticity, tends to produce the most striking results.
Yes, in many cases. Non-surgical treatments like Ultherapy and Morpheus8 can meaningfully tighten the skin along the jawline, and combining them with volume restoration in the cheeks can produce a true lift. Very advanced jowls may eventually need surgery, but most people we see are well-served by non-surgical options.
Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound and reaches the same deep tissue layer a surgeon would tighten in a facelift, making it especially good for lifting. Morpheus8 uses microneedling with radiofrequency and works at a slightly shallower depth, making it strong for tightening and improving skin texture. Many patients use both.
Yes. Younger skin tends to respond more quickly to collagen stimulation due to higher baseline collagen levels. That said, clients of all ages can see meaningful improvement with the right treatment plan.
If you’re looking for measurable skin tightening, yes. Lifestyle habits support skin health but do not affect deeper tissue structure. Non-surgical treatments remodel collagen below the surface where skincare cannot reach.
